Swami Kriyananda

Separation from SRF

Few people who met Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters) after 1962 knew the circumstances of his abrupt departure from Self-Realization Fellowship. At the time, he was Vice-President on the Board of Directors, and had been SRF’s principal lecturer for years. Though the separation was one of the most painful experiences of his life, almost no one knew what had happened. He continued to speak kindly of his former colleagues and encouraged all he met to work closely with them, despite continuing criticism and personal attacks. It was not until many years later that the full story emerged, at the urging of his students, and in hopes that the true story would bring about a change in the organization he served for many years.

Swami Kriyananda answers charges raised by the Bertolucci lawsuit.

In a series of letters to friends, Kriyananda talks about the events that led to the lawsuit by Anne-Marie Bertolucci against Ananda. The story of this young woman and an affair with a married man is, unfortunately, all too common. What was unusual in this case was that when Swami asked that this behavior stop, not long afterwards, this lawsuit was the result.

Swami answers charges that he has changed the teachings of Yogananda.

Regrettably, history provides endless examples of conflicts between religious organizations. Often, the ones that are most alike seem to have the most difficulty getting along. SRF’s position is that it should have exclusive control over Yogananda’s mission. However, SRF has significantly edited Yogananda's writings since his passing in 1952.

Kriyananda answers the 14 questions he most often hears from critics about differences in the way Ananda and SRF present Yogananda’s teachings.
