An alarming national trend

Are false claims of sexual harassment destroying the reputations of innocent men?

What happened to Swami Kriyananda and Ananda was not an isolated incident. In the 1980s and 90s, sexual harassment claims grew steadily. Juries awarded huge sums to victims, based on relatively little evidence, sometimes simply one person’s word against another’s. Indeed, society has corrected what for many years was an unprosecuted harassment—but as with most correctives, many experts say that we have gone too far. The damage done to innocent people—their lives, careers, reputations—is incalculable.

These articles examine the proliferation of sexual misconduct accusations in recent years, and the consequences for both our culture and the individuals involved.

Statistics: False Accusations of Sexual Assault
Linda Fairstein, who directs the prosecution of sexual assault in New York, says that there are approximately 4,000 reports of rape each year in Manhattan. Of these, about half simply did not happen. Says Fairstein, “It’s my job to bring justice to the man who has been falsely accused by a woman who has a grudge against him, just as it’s my job to prosecute the real thing.”

False Rape Allegations
In a recent Purdue University study of a small municipality, false rape allegations constitutes 41% of the total forcible rape cases. Research at college campuses produces similar results, with false rape allegations at approximately 50%.
