J.M. Janice Moreno:
When she was a teenager, in the 1950s, Janice lived for a time as an SRF nun. Swami Kriyananda was also an SRF monastic at that time, but they didnt know each other then, since the monks and nuns were strictly separated. As a monastic, Janice got to know Daya Mata, Ananda Mata, Mrinalini Mata and other SRF leaders who have also been significant figures in the life of Swami Kriyananda.
Even after she left the monastery, Janice remained involved with SRF, its leaders, and two other direct disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda: Durga Mata and Kamala Silva.
From time to time over the years, Janice was in touch with Swami Kriyananda. But it wasnt until the early 1990s that she began to communicate with him on a regular basis. Their shared background in SRF was the common ground for their friendship.
Janice also initiated relationships with many Ananda members, mostly over the telephone, since she lived a distance away and was often plagued with ill health.
At the beginning, Janice was very pro-Kriyananda, and very anti-SRF. Eager to help us defend ourselves against SRFs lawsuit, Janice wrote a letter to Daya Mata, Ananda Mata and Mrinalini Mata, describing Kriyanandas spiritual greatness and urging them to give up their enmity toward him. She wanted her letter shared with everyone at Anandawhich it wasand also filed as one of our legal paperswhich we did. Janice now claims this was all done without her knowledge or consent.
Janice is a complex person, given to extremes. So when she turned against us, she condemned us as zealously as, formerly, she had praised us. She aligned herself with Bertoluccis lawyers and became a source for them of insider information. She had spent time with Swami, and hours on the phone with Ananda members, so she knew enough to give a façade of reality to the fantasy she now created.
Janices nature cannot be easily explained, even less easily understood. When she turned against us, Jyotish and Devi, who knew her as well as anyone, wrote a long letter to the community trying to make some sense out of the whole thing. Here youll find a copy of that letter, plus the declaration in favor of Ananda that Janice wrote.
